Walk into any gym in India on a Monday evening and you will see it: someone brand new, sixteen-ounce gloves fresh out of the box, bare hands underneath. They will hit the heavy bag for three weeks, wake up one morning with a dull ache across the knuckles, and quietly stop coming. The gloves were never the problem. The missing ₹400 pair of wraps was.Your hand has 27 bones, held together by ligaments that were never designed to punch anything. Gloves protect what you hit. Wraps protect the structure doing the hitting — they compress the metacarpals into a single unit, lock the wrist straight, and pad the knuckles where skin splits first. Why 180 inches, not 120Shorter wraps exist because smaller hands exist — not because less material is fine. A 180-inch semi-elastic wrap gives you enough length to cover the wrist three times, build a proper knuckle pad, anchor each finger, and still finish with a clean strap over the wrist. With 120 inches you are always choosing what to leave unprotected."Gloves protect what you hit. Wraps protect what does the hitting."— Every corner-man, everThe five mistakes we see every weekStarting at the knuckles. Anchor at the thumb, build from the wrist. The wrist is the first thing that folds on a bad punch.Wrapping too tight. If your fingertips go cold in five minutes, you've made a tourniquet, not a wrap. Snug fist, relaxed open hand.Skipping the fingers. The between-finger passes are what tie the knuckles into one block. They're the passes everyone skips.Reusing soaked wraps. In Indian humidity, a sweat-soaked wrap left in your bag is a bacteria farm by Thursday. Rotate two pairs, wash weekly.Wrapping loose "for bag work only." The bag doesn't hit back but it also doesn't move. Bag work is where hands break most often.Tape Notes — the short version180-inch semi-elastic wraps. Two pairs, rotated.Anchor at the thumb, wrist first, knuckle pad second, fingers third.Snug when you make a fist, comfortable when open.Wash weekly. Monsoon season: dry fully before they go back in the bag.No wraps, no bag work. Non-negotiable.Wraps are the cheapest thing in your kit and the last thing you should cheap out on mentally. The gloves get the photos. The wraps get you to next year still punching.
